What is more precious than gold or the mega power ball lottery ticket this week that is worth close to a billion dollars? The answer is the word of God. Please read Psalm 19:7-11. As you and I continue to read and study this psalm we are given six synonyms for the word of God. Five of them are the law, testimony, precepts, commandments and rules. These five words teach us that we do not live on bread alone but the very word of God. (Duet. 8:3; Matt. 4:4) These instructions, the self witness of God in his Scriptures, his given procedures for worshiping him, the instructions that he gives us for the way of doing something whether it is Old Testament (Deut. 8; Psalm 119) or the New Testament where Jesus gives us a new command in John 15:12 to love one another. As we follow the rules (judgements) that the LORD (Jesus Christ) has given us, the Holy Spirit will take the word of God and produce in our hearts the fear of God. This fear of the LORD (Jesus Christ) is good because it is clean. Since there is no darkness in God, and since the believer is sealed by the Holy Spirit until the day of redemption, and the Holy Spirit living on the inside of the believers heart, a healthy fear of the Lord will take place. The Holy Spirit will take the word of God as described in these verses and work a work that only he can produce in them. As the Lord justifies and sanctifies the believer he restores them. Having restored them the believer grows in humility and desires to learn from the Lord how to live before him. As the believer learns from the Lord through the Holy Spirit’s ministry the believer begins to put into practice what they are being taught. This brings about a rejoicing of the heart. As one learns to follow the instructions given, a growth in wisdom takes place in their lives. As the fear of the Lord is being produced in the believers life the believer learns just how true the word of God is and just how righteous and holy God is. Our world values gold and the things that gold can buy. Our world also enjoys food and apparently no matter what age we are living in something sweet is always desired. As the believer grows in their relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ they learn to trust and obey. The Lord Jesus gave us believers a promise concerning the Holy Spirit’s ministry in our lives. He will make known to us what is on the Lord’s heart. (John 14-16) This means that he will give us warning so that we will not leave the path of righteousness that he is leading us on. The Holy Spirit will also make known to us the promises of God and bring those promises to pass so that we are blessed by the Lord. If you are a believer, follower of Jesus will you spend time with him today in his word? If you would like to learn more of what it means to study the word of God for life application in your life let me invite you to come and worship with us or any of our local Churches where the Bible is taught and Jesus is Lord.
