In our world today Sex is used to sell everything from car tires, perfume and anything else you can think of. In fact if you don’t agree with the way the world views sex then you are highly disapproved of. What about sex and the Church? What does the God of the Bible say about sex? What we do know about God is revealed in the Bible. And what wants us to know about sex, his commands and views have not changed because Gods word the Bible has not changed. The Bible was written over a time period of about 1500 years by forty different authors all with the same unifying message that the God of the Bible has revealed. First, “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind.” (Numbers 23:19) The LORD instructs us in Malachi 3:6 “For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.” Concerning a promise given to the Lord Jesus Christ by God the Father on being a priest forever Hebrews 7:21 “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, you are a priest forever.” James the Lord’s brother reminds us that “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” So whatever the Lord God of the Bible says or has written about sex will have to be consistent from beginning to end always and forever because he is a holy and eternal God. As Paul is writing to the Corinthian Church in his letter to the Corinthians, please read 1 Corithians 5, he lets them know that it has been reported that there is sexual immorality among them. A man was sleeping with his father’s wife. Not his mom but his step mom. Can you imagine what the Lord would have the apostle Paul write today to the Church. It is actually reported that you have sexual immorality among you, you have people who are practicing sexual heterosexual sin outside the bounds of marriage, you have people practicing homosexual sin and are tolerating it going on inside the church and in some cases ordaining men, women to clergy who practice make it their lifestyle, into ministry. Sexual immorality can be defined as one Bible Dictionary put it: as a wrongful act, wrongful relationship a form of fornication. It is unlawful sexual intercourse according to God’s word as written in the Bible. We see this lived out with fornication, uncharitable, impurity and impure passion in people’s lives today. Leviticus 18 is a whole chapter on unlawful sexual relationships. This man and woman’s sin is addressed in verses 6-8. Verse 8 deals with step moms. “You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife; it is your father’s nakedness.” A form of incest. In the book of Revelation the risen and ascended Lord Jesus addresses two churches and their acceptance of sexual immorality. Revelation 2:12-17 the church of Pergamos, and Revelation 2:18-29 the church in Thyatira. He calls them to repent. Paul calls the church to repent of accepting and tolerating this sexual immorality and also calls the couple to repent of this sin. Sin is any act, attitude or disposition that fails to completely fulfill or measure up to the standard of God’s righteousness as defined by Mallard Erickson’s dictionary of concise Christian Theology. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23) but that doesn’t mean we have to continue to live in it. God teaches us through his word that we should mourn. For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. (2 Corinthians 7:10) The body of Christ was instructed to remove this person from fellowship until they repented of their sin. When each of us repent from a specific sin that the Lord has revealed to us we are to put that sin away. In other words we are to take it off like we take off dirty clothes and put on Christ Jesus make no provision for the flesh. Sex is truly a gift from God and when a heterosexual couple enjoys sex in the covenant relationship of marriage they truly do reflect God, give God glory and enjoy a form of worship and intimacy that is blessed by God. When was the last time you reflected on the Lord God of the Bible and his word so that your life including your sex life is transformed by him? Please memorize Romans 6:22
